Our History

History:

In 1969, Alabama school leaders began to discuss the need for a professional association focused on children, professional development and the needs of school administrators. At that time, the teachers' association began to change its direction and school administrators no longer felt comfortable in that association. The group adopted a constitution in 1971 and was first known as the Alabama Council of School Administrators (ACSA). Later, association members lengthened the name to include school supervisors, and was known as the Alabama Council for School Administration and Supervision (ACSAS). In 1998, members voted to change the association's name to the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS).

Mission:

The mission of the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools is to coordinate and facilitate the resources of all members for the advancement of public education. Consistently, CLAS members choose quality professional development as the most important function of the umbrella organization.

Structure:

CLAS membership is open to individuals who hold or are seeking positions in school administration. CLAS is an umbrella association serving thirteen different affiliate organizations. Each active or institutional CLAS member must join at least one state affiliate. The affiliate organizations provide job-alike conferences and support for members. As an umbrella, CLAS provides professional development, communications, legal support, legislative lobbying, recognition and more to all members. Many CLAS members strengthen their professional connection with membership in a national organization. This choice is up to you.
