Greensboro, Ala – February 7, 2020:  Anthony Sanders, principal of Greensboro Middle School in the Hale County School System, has been named 2020 Alabama Middle School Principal of the Year by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP).

Sanders began his educational career as an American government and economics teacher at Selma High School in 1996. In 2008, he accepted an assistant principal position at Southside High School also in Selma. He was chosen to serve as principal at Greensboro Middle School in 2011. He earned a bachelor’s degree Alabama State University in Montgomery in 1996 and a graduate degree from the University of Phoenix in Arizona in 2008.

The Middle School Principal of the Year award was presented to Sanders on Friday, February 7, 2020 at Greensboro Middle School. Hale County Schools Superintendent Michael Ryans was in attendance for the presentation. An office makeover was presented by Dan Chappell of Interior Elements as part of the awards presentation.

Sanders provides strong instructional leadership in a school where the student population is over 90% free and reduced lunch and 96% African American. The evidence is in the Alabama A-F report card. In 2017-2018, students showed 100% growth and 93% growth in 2018-2019. Greensboro Middle School was also the first school in the state to be designated as a demonstration site for co-teaching in special education in 2015-2016. Sanders received a grant to co-author and develop the Systemic School Improvement Program Co-Teaching Demonstration Site model.

“Anthony Sanders has served AASSP in numerous roles on their board of directors. After witnessing his leadership skills on display for many years, it is no surprise to me that he was chosen for the Alabama Middle School Principal of the Year award,” said CLAS and AASSP Executive Director Dr. Vic Wilson.

The Alabama Middle School Principal of the Year Award is sponsored by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals and Horace Mann Companies. As winner of the Alabama Middle School Principal of the year, Mr. Sanders will receive an office makeover compliments of Interior Elements.

Sanders will be recognized at the Awards Luncheon during the CLAS Convention on June 16, 2020, at the Montgomery Renaissance. The CLAS Convention is the largest gathering of school leaders in the state of Alabama. He will also be recognized at the AASSP/AAMSP Fall Conference in November 2020.
