Differentiation Strategies for RtI with Cindy Strickland
Beat the heat and cool down with skills and strategies to get your school year off to a great start! Based on our Professional Development survey results, CLAS is presenting an "August Hot Topic" session targeted especially for your school. Our Day 1 training session will target Grades K-5 and Day 2: Grades 6-12. Both sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the beautiful Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham. Renowned presenter, Cindy Strickland will share innovative strategies designed especially for the level of your school to help you effectively implement RtI. Come as an individual participant or bring a team from your school to learn skills and strategies to meet the varied needs of your students to ensure students get what they need and achieve more.
Cindy Strickland has been a teacher for 25 years, working with students from kindergarten to the master's level. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in educational psychology, with an emphasis in gifted education, at the University of Virginia, where she works closely with Carol Ann Tomlinson. Strickland's consulting experience includes work with school districts across the United States and Canada as well as in England, France, and Thailand. In the past six years, Cindy Strickland has provided nearly 300 workshops on topics relating to differentiation, the Parallel Curriculum Model, and gifted education.

This program is specifically designed for new principals, allowing time for collaboration with other first-year principals during round table discussions led by an experienced mentor principal. The focus of the training is on the pitfalls of the principalship. Topics will include special education, financial accounting, student achievement, hiring, firing, and the importance of documentation. Each presentation will end with a question and answer period, allowing for brainstorming and collaboration. This professional development opportunity can be applied to Standard III: Human Resource Development or Standard VII: Management of the Learning Organization.

Alabama Leadership Summit: Building a System-wide Focus on Student Achievement
Please join the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS), Dr. Willard R. Daggett and Joe Shannon from the International Center for Leadership in Education, and school leaders from across Alabama for two days of interactive, hands-on sessions focused on building a system-wide approach to student achievement.
Using the Daggett System for Effective Instruction, each leadership team will build an in-depth, practical action plan to put into place when they return to their school or district.
The Leadership Summit will consist of a keynote address and facilitated planning sessions. Special emphasis will be placed on transitioning to the Common Core State Standards, next generation assessments, and teacher evaluation based on student performance.

Principals can accomplish more as instructional leaders by sharing leadership and decision-making with others. Shared leadership empowers teacher leaders and school leadership teams to do more to improve instruction than one individual can accomplish alone. You will not want to miss this two-day training, implementation of activities, and opportunity to collaborate with other administrators. Participants will view and discuss examples of effective learning communities and identify strategies for building the Professional Learning Community in your school. Attendance on both days is required to receive credit. This event can be used as one activity for Standard I: Planning for Continuous Improvement or Standard IV: Diversity.

The annual CLAS Secretaries Conference is one of the only professional development opportunities offered to school secretaries and bookkeepers. Keynote speakers and special guests provide motivational and inspirational messages geared specifically for the support roles of secretaries and bookkeepers. Breakout sessions provide information and updates related to their day-to-day tasks. This conference is an economical way to hear from interesting speakers, sharpen skills, and become more efficient in the educational administrative field.

This conference, offered in two locations, is designed for administrators who want to be more effective leaders and plan to move into the principalship. Multiple tracks are offered to fit the needs of novice and experienced assistant principals. Topics include what effective leaders do, athletic issues, the next step up the career ladder, school safety, solutions to minimize student behavior problems, what's new for Alabama school administrators, current legal issues, and the high performance administrator.

Keeping up with school law issues is challenging for both the experienced and novice school administrator. You need to know how to accomplish your tasks and minimize the possibility of legal trouble. Participants can choose from topics such as special education, contracts, students' rights, ethics, search and seizure, dismissal and arbitration, and board policy. Presenters at this conference are a Who's Who of the most respected legal experts in school law at the state and federal levels. This event can be used as one activity toward a PLU in Standard VII: Management of the Learning Organization.

The focus of this conference is the 21st Century Principalship...Getting the Job Done Right. Expreienced administrators lead this workshop and equip aspiring leaders with the tools needed to be effective leaders. Participants will review studies about the current roles and responsibilities of school administrators, examine and affirm their own professional talents and interests, and map personal career plans. Session content and activities will also focus on developing a professional portfolio and practical tips for a winning interview.
