James Clemens High School Principal Dr. Brian Clayton has been named the 2018-2019 Alabama Principal of the Year by AASSP. The award is sponsored by American Fidelity
Madison, Ala: Dr. Brian Clayton, principal of James Clemens High School in the Madison City School System, has been named 2018-2019 Alabama Principal of the Year by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP). Clemens will represent the state of Alabama in a national judging of school leaders in the National Principal of the Year Program sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
During his 24-year career in education, 19 of those years in administration, Clayton has been a math teacher, assistant football coach, assistant principal, and middle school principal.
Dr. Clayton joined James Clemens High Schools as the principal in 2012.
Clayton holds a Bachelor and Master of Science in Secondary Education Math, and an Education Doctorate from the University of Alabama.
His award was announced during a school pep rally January 4. The announcement was a staged surprise. The staff at James Clemens High School and Madison City School System were invited to bring guests and family members of Dr. Clayton to be a part of the award presentation.
“Dr. Brian Clayton is an exceptional leader, and he is very deserving to be recognized by his peers and the selection committee as the 2018 Alabama High School Principal of the Year,” stated Dr. Vic Wilson, AASSP Executive Director. “I am thrilled to know that Brian Clayton will take his place among the great past winners of this award, and that he will be a fine example for new principals to follow for many years.”
The Alabama Principal of the Year Award is sponsored by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals and American Fidelity. A trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the NASSP Principal of the Year Awards Program is provided by AASSP.
Clayton will be recognized at the Awards Luncheon during the CLAS Convention on June 12, 2018, at the Mobile Convention Center. The CLAS Annual Summer Convention is the largest gathering of school leaders in the state of Alabama. He will also be recognized at the AASSP/AAMSP Fall Conference in November 2018.
