Birmingham, Ala: Mr. Van Phillips, Sr., principal of Center Point High School in the Jefferson County School System, has been named 2017-2018 Alabama Principal of the Year by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP). Phillips will represent the state of Alabama in a national judging of school leaders in the National Principal of the Year Program sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
Phillips earned his Bachelor’s degree from Kentucky State University, a Master’s degree from Bowling Green State University, and his Advanced Administrative Certification from Alabama State University.
Phillips has served as an educator for 34 years, 29 of those years in administration.
Principal Phillips is credited with partnering with stakeholders, on every level, to afford students access to the best facilities and instructional resources available.
Phillips created a Freshman Academy in response to instructional challenges. The Freshman Academy is housed in Center Point High School and allows ninth-graders to experience success within a smaller environment with less distractions. He also initiated an after-school tutorial program for instructional support. This program provides students with daily tutorial services, hot dinner meals four times a week, and transportation home at the end of each evening.
“Congratulations to Van Phillips on his selection as Alabama’s Principal of the Year,” states Dr. L. Earl Franks, CAE, AASSP executive director. “His accomplishments as a principal are significant and worthy of accolades and recognition at the highest level. Phillips’ leadership in transforming Center Point High School to meet students’ needs reflects his abilities that are worthy of state and national recognition. We are excited to have Mr. Phillips represent Alabama in this prestigious program.”
The Alabama Principal of the Year Award is sponsored by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals. A trip to Washington, D.C., to the NASSP Principal of the Year Awards Program is provided by AASSP. Phillips will be recognized at the Awards Luncheon during the CLAS Convention on June 13, 2017, at the Mobile Convention Center.
