We've lost a beloved member, staffer, and supporter of CLAS in G.B. Beasley, who passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017.
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that George Brewer, G.B. Beasley, a longtime member, staffer, past president, and supporter of CLAS and AASSP passed away Thursday.
G.B. was well known throughout the state as a supporter of public education. He served as AASSP president in 1981-1982 then as CLAS president in 1985-1986. In 2004, AASSP established the G.B. Beasley Leadership Award in his honor. He was inducted into the Alabama Educational Leadership Hall of Fame in 2016.
G.B. began his career at Etowah High School in 1956. Throughout his fifty-two years in the field of education, he served 17 years as a math teacher and coach at Cherokee High School, Albertville High School, and Haleyville High School. In 1973, he received his first principalship at Fort Payne High School, where he served until his retirement in 1999. He also served in various leadership roles on the Fort Payne City School Board from 2000-2006.
Upon retirement, G.B. continued working to improve education in the state of Alabama through his involvement with the Alabama Legislature as an advocate for CLAS and a consultant for the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP) affiliate.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Saturday, April 1, 2017. The funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 2, 2017. All services will be at First Baptist Church in Fort Payne, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Homes for Our Troops or the G.B. Scholarship Fund at Fort Payne High School.
